Con Ed

project overview

While working at Code and Theory in 2021, I contributed to a broader digital transformation initiative for Con Edison focused on modernizing the company's web experience. As part of the engagement, our team was asked to explore opportunities to improve the digital utility bill experience. The objective was to investigate how a traditionally static document could become a more informative, transparent, and engaging customer touchpoint while remaining aligned with Con Edison’s established brand and design system.

Working within a small design team, I helped create exploratory concepts that reimagined the bill as an interactive digital experience rather than a simple statement of charges. Inspired by patterns commonly found in modern e-commerce experiences, the concepts introduced contextual hover states and expandable information panels that allowed customers to learn more about specific charges, fees, and usage data directly within the bill interface. One of the primary goals of the exploration was to improve customer understanding of how utility costs are calculated. Interactive elements were designed to reveal additional context about energy usage, seasonal consumption patterns, and factors contributing to monthly billing fluctuations. The experience also explored opportunities to incorporate educational content, including short videos, visual explanations, and supporting statistics that could help customers better understand their energy consumption and billing details. All concepts were created in Figma and built using Con Edison’s existing design language, component standards, and brand guidelines. The challenge was to introduce new interactive patterns while ensuring they felt consistent with the broader ecosystem of digital experiences being developed as part of the website redesign effort. This required balancing innovation with familiarity, allowing new features to feel like a natural extension of the company's existing visual identity. Final Result The utility bill redesign was developed as an exploratory workstream within the larger website modernization project and served as a vehicle for testing new ideas around transparency, education, and customer engagement. While the broader website redesign initiative moved forward, the bill experience concepts were intended to demonstrate how interactive design principles could transform a routine utility statement into a more informative and customer-friendly digital experience.
