party city

project overview

Party City is a national retail chain specializing in party supplies, seasonal products, balloons, and event-related goods. In 2021, while working at Code and Theory, I contributed to a large-scale redesign of Party City’s ecommerce experience focused on improving usability, streamlining checkout flows, and increasing online conversion performance.

The project involved extensive UX research into modern ecommerce behaviors and purchasing patterns across both traditional retail and delivery-based platforms. Working alongside UX strategists and designers, we analyzed user flows, navigation systems, product organization structures, and checkout experiences to create a more intuitive and scalable shopping environment across the entire site. A major focus of the redesign centered around developing a comprehensive UI system for Party City’s ecommerce platform. This included redesigning navigation, menus, product listing systems, checkout components, form fields, buttons, and reusable interface patterns. The work emphasized consistency, modularity, and clarity while supporting the wide range of products and shopping behaviors unique to the Party City ecosystem. The team also designed and tested multiple fulfillment and delivery workflows tailored specifically to Party City’s business model. These included traditional shipping, scheduled event-based deliveries for products like balloons and party supplies, and several pickup options inspired by both grocery pickup and food delivery platforms. Using interactive Figma prototypes, we conducted user testing sessions and gathered feedback throughout multiple design sprints to continuously refine the experience. Throughout the engagement, I worked closely with client stakeholders, Party City’s internal brand team, project managers, and fellow designers during regular presentations and collaborative reviews. Final Result Over the course of the roughly nine-month engagement, the project delivered a fully redesigned ecommerce experience built around modern UX principles, scalable modular systems, and flexible fulfillment workflows tailored to Party City’s customers. The final handoff provided the client with a significantly refreshed digital shopping experience and a cohesive design framework capable of supporting future ecommerce growth.
